President Shimada gives Lecture at Japan National Press Club

 On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, President Shinji Shimada gave a lecture titled “Toward the Revival of a Science and Technology Nation”.
 President Shimada explained the current situation and background of the decline and stagnation of Japan’s science and technology capabilities (decline in research capabilities) and necessary measures to improve research capabilities, based on comparisons with major countries and the status of university reform.
 In particular, the state of science and technology policies that have been implemented in the name of “selection and concentration” and the newly established “10 trillion yen fund (International University of Research Excellence)” were discussed, he advocated that it was necessary to revitalize local universities and other institutions from their bottom, with his experiences which as a researcher, a director of the University hospital and a President.
 In addition, as the example of local universities’ activities, he talked about the response to COVID-19 at the University of Yamanashi, the situation regarding support for Ukrainian university students who lost their place to study due to the Russian military invasion and , from his position as a member of the Second Subcommittee on Pharmaceuticals of the Pharmaceutical Affairs and Food Sanitation Council of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the development and supply issues regarding COVID-19 vaccine and new drugs.
